You could be a writer for ages, or you are starting your writing career. Whatever it is, you should know these eight laws. These can help you with what to take note of when it comes to writing.
1. First Draft: This does not determine the quality of the book!
The quality of the writer’s writing is not visible in their first draft. Do not criticize it single-handedly. A draft has room for improvement. It is evident on the journey of achieving good quality writing.
2. Avoid Long Sentences: Keep it Simple.
It is a beginner’s mistake to assume that being able to write tons of long sentences is what makes a good writer. Wrong! A good writer does not need to portray their messages in long sentences. As much as possible, if you explain it simply, the better!
3. Do not use words that you are not familiar with.
Searching on the internet to look for its synonym can be tempting. But, if you are not sure if it fits the message of your message, then it better not use it. Be certain that the words you are using fit appropriately in their context. Fancy words do not correlate with good writing skills!
4. Do not Impress Your Readers!
It is a misconception that when you write, you need to impress your readers. You need to express your message first. When you can express your message clearly through your writing, impressing your readers will follow. Expressing is the momentum in impressing your audience.
5. Understand Your Target Audience
Who do you want to share your message with? Is it children, teenagers, or adults? Understand your target audience so you can have a clear way of expressing your points. Also, you can make use of the appropriate language use in its respective target audience.
6. Use Jargon Appropriately.
Are you writing that is meant for children, and yet you are using words that are hard to understand by children? Then you are doing it wrong! Use words that are appropriate to the readers of your story. Same if you are writing that is meant for college students, then your choice of words is meant for a layperson.
7. Do not edit while writing.
Edit your writing after you are done. Editing while writing is never a good idea. It would not make it better, and neither would it make a difference in its result. Keep writing until you are done.
8. Keep reading and writing.
Writers are naturally known for being avid readers. Reading will improve your writing skills and how you deliver your words. Front time to time, reading some books will help you hone your writing. However, do not forget to also keep on writing. It will serve as a reflection of you as a reader.
